Scholarships

Part of XUSOM’s mission is to make quality medical education more affordable. Currently, we are proud to offer 11 different Scholarship opportunities!

 

Students entering MD1 may apply for the following:

I. MCAT Scholarship

II. Women in STEM Grant

III. Congressman John Lewis Equality Memorial Scholarship

IV. NY State University Scholarship (SUNY/CUNY/Community College)

V. Citizen Responsibility/Civic Duty Scholarship

VI. Medical Field Work Experience Scholarship

The following scholarships will be automatically awarded to qualified students:

IX. Dean’s Scholarship

X. Ongoing Academic Scholarship

XI. Clinical Science Scholarship

 

All of the following terms must be met in order to receive and maintain any Scholarship:

I. Must have continuous enrollment

II. Must maintain satisfactory academic progression at the discretion of the Chief Academic Officer

III. No disciplinary actions of any sort while a student of XUSOM

IV. Student must reside at on-campus housing during Basic Science semesters

V. Tuition must be fully paid by the due date

Any additional terms will be listed below. Scholarships may be rescinded if terms are not met, and the student will be responsible for full tuition.

I. MCAT Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: At XUSOM, we understand that not everyone is a natural “test-taker” at this stage, so we do not require the MCAT for the admissions process. We will, however, get you comfortable with taking medical exams during your studies! In the meantime, we want to recognize students who have taken the initiative to write the MCAT. The value of the scholarship will be dictated by the exam score at the discretion of the Chief Academic Officer.

b. Award Amount: between $15,000-$30,000 ($2,500-$5,000 per semester for MD1-MD6)

c. Eligibility Requirements: Students entering MD1 who have taken the MCAT

II. Women in STEM Grant

a. About the Scholarship: XUSOM is a proud supporter of increasing gender inclusivity in the medical field. With this scholarship, we hope to help lessen the gap between males and females working in the STEM field.

b. Award Amount: Up to $44,000 ($4,000 per semester)

c. Eligibility Requirements (must meet all):

        1. Students entering MD1
        2. Women who earned a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics
        3. Must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher

III. Congressman John Lewis Equality Memorial Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: Congressman John Lewis stood to fight inequities in all aspects of his life. This scholarship is offered to students that come from under-represented minority groups.

b. Award Amount: $60,000

        1. $5,000 per semester for MD1-MD6
        2. $6,000 per semester for clinical semesters 1-5

c. Eligibility Requirements (must meet all):

        1. Students entering MD1
        2. Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
        3. Must be classified as an under-represented minority (African-American, Native American, or Hispanic-American)

IV. NY State University Scholarship (SUNY/CUNY/Community College)

a. About the Scholarship: At XUSOM we are committed to our students having a comprehensive global experience as patients come from all parts of the world with all sorts of background. As we celebrate our NY state accreditation, we would like to offer a scholarship to all residents of New York State who matriculated from a NY State University or College (SUNY/CUNY/Community College).

b. Award Amount: Up to $22,000 ($2,000 per semester)

c. Eligibility Requirements (must meet all):

        1. Students entering MD1
        2. NY residents who have studied at a New York State University School (SUNY/CUNY/Community college) or NY residents who complete their Pre-Med courses at XUSOM (eligible upon entrance to MD1)

V. Citizen Responsibility/Civic Duty Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: XUSOM encourages its graduates to give back to the community in all ways that they can. This Scholarship is awarded to students who have shown unparalleled commitment through service in their community’s hospitals, nursing homes, or charities.

b. Award Amount: Up to $33,000 ($3,000 per semester)

c. Eligibility Requirements: Students entering MD1

VI. Medical Field Work Experience Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: XUSOM understands that career plans and paths change. We would like to provide an opportunity to people already working in the medical field to take the next step and start medical school.

b. Award Amount: Up to $33,000 ($3,000 per semester)

c. Eligibility Requirements: Students entering MD1 who are already working in the medical field in a hands-on setting including, but not limited to, nurses, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, etc.

Students entering MD1 will automatically be considered for the following scholarships:

VII. Presidential Excellence Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a select group of qualified students in each incoming class.

b. Award Amount: $71,000

        1. $6,000 per semester for MD1-MD6
        2. $7,000 per semester for clinical semesters 1-5

c. Eligibility Requirements (must meet all):

        1. Students entering MD1
        2. Hold an undergraduate U.S. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (students who complete their Pre-Med courses at XUSOM are eligible upon entrance to MD1)
        3. Pre-requisite and undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or above from a United States or Canadian University
        4. MCAT score of 504 or above

d. Additional Scholarship Terms: Must maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA

VIII. Chancellor Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a select group of qualified students in each incoming class.

b. Award Amount: $52,000

        1. $4,500 per semester for MD1-MD6
        2. $5,000 per semester for clinical semesters 1-5

c. Eligibility Requirements (must meet all):

        1. Students entering MD1
        2. Hold an undergraduate U.S. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (students who complete their Pre-Med courses at XUSOM are eligible upon entrance to MD1)
        3. Pre-requisite and undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or above from a United States or Canadian University
        4. MCAT score of 500 or above

d. Additional Scholarship Terms: Must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA

IX. Dean’s Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a select group of qualified students in each incoming class.

b. Award Amount: $35,500

        1. $3,000 per semester for MD1-MD6
        2. $3,500 per semester for clinical semesters 1-5

c. Eligibility Requirements (must meet all):

        1. Students entering MD1
        2. Hold an undergraduate U.S. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (students who complete their Pre-Med courses at XUSOM are eligible upon entrance to MD1)
        3. Pre-requisite and undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above from a United States or Canadian University

d. Additional Scholarship Terms: Must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA

The following scholarships are based on academic merit and will be automatically applied to qualified students’ accounts:

X. Ongoing Academic Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: Xavier offers ongoing scholarships for students in our Pre-Med and Basic Science semesters whose previous semester’s GPA was at least a 3.25.

b. Award Amount: Based on the previous semester’s GPA.

XI. Clinical Science Scholarship

a. About the Scholarship: The United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE) is a mandatory test that allows you to practice medicine in the United States. It assesses a doctor’s ability to apply important medical knowledge while maintaining safe and effective patient care. The USMLE is broken up into different exams, or “Steps.” Step 1 is typically taken after a student has completed their first two Basic Sciences years of medical school. We understand the importance of the USMLE Step 1 exam, and wish to reward those who excel at this critical step in their medical careers. Students are eligible for an ongoing scholarship if their first attempt of the USMLE Step 1 is scored at least 215. This scholarship will be applied to each required clinical science semester.

b. Award Amount: Based on the first attempt score of the USMLE Step 1.

c. Eligibility Requirements:

        1. Students must have completed all Basic Science semesters (MD1-MD6) at Xavier
        2. Only based on the score of the first attempt of the USMLE Step 1
