Your Journey in Medicine
Whether you’re finishing your A Levels or IB, or have already completed university study, Xavier University School of Medicine provides a clear pathway to becoming a doctor. Our programmes are designed to accommodate students at different stages of their academic journey while delivering the same internationally recognised medical education. Students complete their Basic Sciences in Aruba before undertaking clinical rotations at ACGME-affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States, graduating with an MD degree after successfully completing the USMLE examinations. Graduates may then pursue postgraduate medical training and registration in the UK, the United States, or Canada, subject to the requirements of the relevant regulatory authorities.

Yes. A-Levels, IB, NCUK, and IF Programmes are all considered on an individual basis. The admissions committee reviews each applicant’s academic background, science grades, and personal statement individually to determine eligibility for direct entry into either the 5-year MD programme or the Pre-Health pathway.
Direct entry into the 4-year MD programme requires completion of a bachelor’s degree (BSc or equivalent) in a relevant science-related field. The degree should include the standard pre-medical science prerequisites, such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Applicants are assessed individually to ensure they have the academic foundation necessary for success in the MD programme.
XUSOM offers two primary pathways into medicine. The 4-year MD programme is intended for applicants who have already completed a relevant bachelor’s degree (BSc or equivalent) and the required pre-medical science coursework.
For students applying directly from high school or a foundation programme, XUSOM offers a 5 year pathway that includes an accelerated pre-health phase before progression into the MD curriculum. This pathway is designed to provide the academic foundation needed for success in medical school while offering a direct route into the MD programme.
The curriculum is designed to align with USMLE standards throughout the programme. The Basic Sciences phase provides the foundational medical knowledge required for success on USMLE Step 1 (Pass/Fail), while the Clinical Sciences phase, including clinical rotations at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States, prepares students for USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK).
This structured approach helps students develop the academic knowledge and clinical skills necessary for residency training and medical licensure in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other international jurisdictions.
UK citizens do not need a tourist visa to enter Aruba, but a student visa/residence permit is required for long-term study. The XUSOM Admissions Office guides students through submitting the required medical clearances, police checks, and proof of financial support to Aruban immigration.
For the clinical phase, international students typically require a B1/B2 visa, depending on the hospital network and placement structure. XUSOM’s Clinical Department provides the necessary institutional documentation to support visa applications. However, visa approval is solely determined by U.S. immigration authorities, and XUSOM is not responsible for the approval or denial of visas.
Yes, all clinical training is strictly in-person. This is a hard requirement for both the GMC and US licensing boards. Students complete core and elective rotations under direct physician supervision at ACGME-approved hospitals.
