Certificate in Medical Teaching

In this ten-month course participants will be expected to participate in monthly, scheduled webinars and complete a self-directed Medical Education Project. Webinars will be supplemented by readings and online learning activities. The goals of this program are to:

  • Critically examine key principles and theoretical perspectives of adult learning, teaching and learning in medical education;
  • Review fundamental principles and systematic approaches to curriculum planning and instructional design in medical education;
  • Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of learning methods and techniques and their application in medical education;
  • Examine and compare the effectiveness of different medical education approaches and implications for teaching and learning practices in medicine;
  • Analyze the educational characteristics and principles of clinical teaching in a variety of settings;
  • Review concepts, principles and techniques of assessment and program evaluation approaches in medical education;
  • Critically evaluate and recognize the attributes of an effective clinical teacher;
  • Recognize and apply principles of scholarly teaching in medical education

Faculty Development Webinar/Seminar Series

Monthly Faculty Development Webinars/Seminars are conducted on an annual basis for all part- time and full-time Xavier faculty members. Topics are identified based on regular needs assessment surveys of all Xavier faculty members and input from Xavier University Faculty Development Committee.

Microteaching and Peer Observation of Teaching Program

This program involves the recording of five (5) minute presentations/lecturettes presented by faculty members on topics pertinent to their teaching disciplines. Presentations are recorded for later playback and viewing with an expert peer-coach. Faculty members are also invited to present their 5-minute micro-teach presentations to their peers and colleagues, whom are also able to provide peer feedback using a standardized teaching effectiveness checklist. A follow-up one-on-one Peer Observation and Peer-Coaching session is conducted with an expert peer-coach to review video recording, critique presentation skills and identify areas for further improvement and professional development. A checklist for ‘Peer Assessment of Medical Lecturing’ is used to critique and provide feedback to the faculty member by the expert peer-coach.

Medical Education Scholarship Program (MESP)

The scholarship program will involve a cohort of participants in an extended and formalized program of professional development focused on enhancing competencies in educational scholarship. The program is designed to support participants in enhancing their skills in planning and undertaking scholarly work in medical education.

Program Requirements

Medical Education Scholarship Seminars: Minimum 5 seminars (2 hrs x 5 = 10 hrs total) addressing specific educational scholarship competencies. At the end of these seminars, participants will be able to:

  1. Designing and Managing a Scholarly Research/ Innovation Project in Medical Education Meeting
    • Identify key aspects of planning for educational research/innovation in medical education
  2. Quantitative Research in Medical Education
    • Describe quantitative research study designs and methods in medical education and analytical approaches
  1. Qualitative Research in Medical Education
    • Describe qualitative research methods in medical education and analytical approaches
  2. Publishing and Presenting your work in Medical Education
    • Discuss key tips for publishing and presenting on innovation and scholarship in medical education
  3. Developing a Scholarly Project in Medical Education
    • Develop a plan for undertaking educational research/innovation in medical education
