Ambassador of India Visits Xavier University School of Medicine – June 25–26, 2025
Dr. Sumit Seth, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, paid a two-day visit to Xavier University School of Medicine (XUSOM) in Oranjestad, Aruba, on June 25 and 26, 2025. The Ambassador was warmly welcomed by Dr. Arun K. Dubey, Chief Academic Officer of XUSOM, along with faculty members, Mr. Prakash Gupta, Honorary Secretary of the Indian Community in Aruba, and several other distinguished members of the local Indian diaspora.
During his visit, Dr. Seth engaged in thoughtful dialogue with university leadership and community representatives, highlighting the potential to strengthen Indo-Aruban relations through the "5 Ts" — Talent, Tradition, Trade, Tourism, and Technology. He described India not just as a destination but as a vibrant, evolving experience—comparing it to a feature film, with each frame offering something new and meaningful.
In a special segment of the visit, Dr. Seth recognized and felicitated outstanding Indian community members in Aruba, particularly those with achievements in sports. He also introduced scholarship opportunities offered by the Government of India to international students, encouraging exploration of India`s academic and cultural landscape for mutual growth and development.
A medical doctor by training, Ambassador Seth showed keen interest in the academic mission of XUSOM. He visited the university’s upcoming new campus and participated in an interactive session with students. He expressed strong support for expanding the school’s academic and clinical footprint, promoting medical tourism, and fostering partnerships between Indian medical educators and institutions in Aruba.

Effective June 30, 2025, Dr. Richard Pestell will conclude his seven years of distinguished service at Xavier.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Pestell played a pivotal role in advancing Xavier’s academic and clinical programs. He championed the integration of translational research into the medical curriculum and training of future physicians, significantly enhancing the educational experience. As Clinical Dean, he implemented a robust system of continuous, objective monitoring and quality improvement at affiliate teaching hospitals, ensuring they consistently met accreditation standards. His efforts were critical in maintaining the ongoing accreditation of the MD program.
Dr. Pestell now embarks on an exciting new chapter in Europe, having been awarded the prestigious “Billion Forint Award”—a $2.6 million grant to further groundbreaking medical research.
We are profoundly grateful for his visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and lasting contributions to the Xavier community. We wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.
