XUSOM LIBRARY POLICIES:

The XUSOM Library strive to provide a professional environment in which students can study, seek and create information, or explore new knowledge sources in a comfortable and conducive setting.

The XUSOM Library primary users are the faculty, students, staff of the school only.

Library Use and Conduct Code

The XUSOM Library seeks to provide all users with:

  • A welcoming, comfortable, and safe environment that promotes intellectual exploration and learning
  • Access to well managed and diverse collections of library resources
  • Knowledgeable and helpful staff

Users are responsible for their personal property at all times, and should never leave personal belongings unattended. The Libraries are not liable for loss or damage to personal property.

Borrowing Materials:

  • A Student ID card with current quarter sticker is required to check out library material.
  • All material in the "Main Collection" can be checked out to students for 10 days. (Limit 3)
  • Reference and reserve material is available for reading and copying in the Library only.
  • While the new system is being implemented, all check outs must be processed by the Librarian.

Library Collections (Use and Protection):

  • Library materials, equipment, or property may not be taken from the Libraries without proper checkout or authorization. Library materials must be returned on or before the expiration of the loan period or upon request by the Libraries.
  • Library materials may not be concealed in the Libraries for the exclusive use of individuals or groups.
  • Library materials must not be mutilated, defaced, or damaged in any way. This includes but is not limited to marking, underlining, or writing on pages; folding or removing pages or portions of pages; removing or damaging binding; removing electronic theft devices or labels; or applying sticky notes, paper clips, or other damaging materials.
  • Library computers may not be used to participate in games, chat sessions, or any other activity not directly related to university and library research and instruction. Use is limited to twenty minutes when others are waiting for access.

Cell Phones:

As a courtesy to library users, cell phones should be switched to silent or the lowest audible settings to minimize disruptions to individuals who are seeking quiet study space.

Users should set cell phones to silent or vibrate modes, while in the Medical Library, and should make or receive calls outside of the library.

Food & Smoking:

  • The School of Medicine is a smoke-free institution.
  • Food and Drink Beverages are not allowed in the library.

Computer Use:

There are 4 computers in the library. These are reserved for the use of students, staff, and faculty of XUSOM.

The library computers are not to be used for the following:

  • Seeking unauthorized access to library or network computer systems or files with the intent of violating computer security; altering system or network configurations; altering system or network access codes; sabotage; or causing damage through the placing of viruses, worms or embedded messages
  • Engaging in any illegal activity, including violation of copyright laws or licensing agreements
  • Misrepresenting oneself on the Internet or engaging in fraud
  • Viewing, downloading, or disseminating pornography
  • Issuing threats
  • Participating in chat rooms or forums that are non-work related
  • Playing games

Reserves Policy:

Do you need to use a course textbook? Are you studying for the USMLE? If so, the library offers these materials for your use. On reserve in the library are at least three copies of each required and recommended textbook for every class. There are also preparation materials for each step of the USMLE. Because of the high usage rate of these materials there are special policies in place to ensure they are available for student use.

  • As with all library materials, Reserve Books must stay in the library.
  • Reserve books must also be signed out by the student every time the item is used.
  • To sign out a reserve book, please ask the Librarian or the on-duty Student Assistant for the book you need.
  • The date, your name, the title of the book, and the book's barcode will be recorded at the time of request.
  • When it is returned your initials and date are required.
